What’s it about?

For five long years Feyi Adekola has managed her grief after losing her young husband.  She is finally ready to move forward with her life.  She dives back in by starting a purely sexual relationship with a stranger at a party.  Moving forward she begins a friendship with the perfect guy- and yet she decides to take it slow.  When he invites her to the islands to meet his family she falls hard for his father.

What did it make me think about?

What a departure this book is from Emezi’s last novel- “The Death of Vivek Oji”.  This reads like a Terry McMillan novel- which is not a bad thing, just different from what I expected.

Should I read it?

Well…..  I am incredibly impressed with the author’s ability to morph into a different type of storyteller. This book falls squarely in the romance category with lots of explicit sex scenes included.  As many of you know “The Death of Vivek Oji” was one of my favorite books last year.  This story is very different, but if romance is your genre then I am sure you will enjoy it.  My favorite character was Feyi’s lesbian best friend Joy.  Although done well, this is not my favorite genre and the story was a little dramatic for my tastes.  I am still impressed with Emezi’s ability to transform herself as an author and I plan to pick up her next book whenever she writes it.  She is obviously a woman with many talents.

Quote-

“He was so sweet, so terrifying in what he could represent, the possibility of someone actually seeing her.  A world after Jonah.” ***I must add that all my favorite quotes were between Feyi and Joy and were too explicit to use.
