What’s it about? This slim novel takes place in Glasgow, Scotland and introduces us to William Watt.  William’s family have all been murdered in their beds- and all suspicions are on him.  In order to clear himself he meets with Peter Manuel (a career criminal who claims to have information) and has an epic night carousing the bars of Glasgow.  The next time they meet they are sitting in a courtroom.
What did it make me think about? This is just an interesting story that highlights Glasgow in the 1950’s.  I often forget how much life has changed in the last 70 years.  This novel is based on real life events and in some ways reminded me of “In Cold Blood” by Truman Capote.Should I read it? Denise Mina has a unique way of telling this story.  This is a quick book, but it packs quite a bit in.  I would recommend this one. Quote- “ He thought, his wife thought, that women should not be out at that time.  He thought and his wife said, they must be a peculiar kinds of women to be out there at that time, in a field with a man.  They didn’t think these things because they were nasty people, or spiteful, or uncaring.  They thought these things so that they were not terrified all the time.”
