What’s it about?

Peter Attia is a medical doctor who is interested in living better longer.  In this book he explores why he became interested in longevity and then shares some of what he has learned over the years.  He concentrates on the chronic diseases that kill most people- heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s disease and type 2 diabetes.  Once we learn a little more about these diseases he shares what he thinks we need to do to steer clear of them longer.

What did it make me think about?

Everyone’s body is different- but in general try not to overeat, not too much alcohol, sleep well, and exercise more!

Should I read it?

This was a really fresh take on preventative medicine.  It outlines how much we really still do not know about so many diseases, and also encourages you to do what you can to age gracefully (whatever that means to you).  I SO appreciated that he does not have one particular diet for all of us to follow.  In fact, he does not seem to see any particular food group as a culprit- it is all just risk and rewards. Just try not to overeat, and try to eat a diet that will not push you towards diabetes (processed foods are a big risk).  He does have some specific ideas on exercise, watching your very important glucose levels, and getting the right amount of sleep.  I gleaned quite a bit of information from this book that will hopefully have me picking up my grandchildren off the floor for years to come!

Quote-

“The simplest explanation is likely that our metabolism, as it has evolved over millennia, is not equipped to cope with our ultramodern diet, which has appeared only within the last century or so.”
