What’s it about? This book is s dystopian novel set in a future America.  The novel centers on the character of Fan.   Fan is slotted to be a “tank diver” due to her ability to hold her breath for extended periods of time coupled with her small stature.  Her boyfriend Reg also works on the tanks but goes missing one day.  Fan decides to venture out of her closed community to find Reg.  The book follows her journey.
What did it make me think about? Chang Rae-Lee is one of my favorite writers and although this book is beautifully written I kept wishing I was reading “A Gesture Life” or “Native Speaker” again instead.  This book just did not do it for me.  I think my expectations were too high as I have read every book he has written and loved them all.
Should I read it? If you are a big fan of dystopian novels then by all means read it.
Quote- “The more we follow the turns of her journey, the more we realize that she is not quite the champion we would normally sing; she is not the heroine who wields the great sword. . . . She is one of the ranks, this perfectly ordinary, exquisitely tiny person in whom we will reside, via both living and dreaming.”
