Less is Lost
By Andrew Sean Greer
257 pages
What’s it about?
Andrew Sean Greer has resurrected the character of Arthur Less from his last book. “Less” won the Pulitzer Prize in 2018 so this story has a lot to keep up with. Luckily for us Andrew Sean Greer is an author of immense talent and Arthur Less is almost as endearing in “Less is Lost” as he was in “Less”.What did it make me think about?
“The problem in the world is that we aren’t kind to one another. It’s kindness and human spirit that drives us. We have one another. That’s all we have. We must celebrate them.”Should I read it?
“Less is Lost” has large shoes to fill and for the most part Andrew Sean Greer comes through. I enjoyed this short novel- maybe not quite as much as “Less”, but more than many stories I read. It is hopeful, funny, and filled with humanity. Who doesn’t enjoy these qualities in a book once in awhile. I would strongly urge you to read “The Confessions of Max Tivoli” and “The Story of a Marriage”. I really enjoyed both of these books before I started sharing reviews.Quote-
“Because to love someone ridiculous is to understand something deep and true about the world. That up close it makes no sense. Those of you who choose sensible people may feel secure, but I think you water your wine; the wonder of life is in its small absurdities, so easily overlooked. And if you have not shared somebody’s tilted view of the horizon (which is the actual world), tell me: what have you really seen?”What’s it about?
