What’s it about?

When Jess gets a call at her home in London that her grandmother, Nora, is in the hospital she makes the long journey home to Australia.  She soon discovers that something has been troubling Nora and it has certainly been taking a toll on her health. At 40-years-old Jess has been gone a long time but she still has a strong connection to the grandmother who raised her.  She soon discovers a family tragedy that she had been unaware of her whole life.  Going back and forth in time we slowly unwind Nora’s mystery.

What did it make me think about?

Secrets…

Should I read it?

I always savor a Kate Morton mystery. They are so English and always feel so atmospheric.  This was not my favorite of her books by any means.  It was long and just took awhile to get into.  As always, her characters were really interesting and she has a very individual style to her writing.  If you have never read Kate Morton start with a different novel- if you are a fan then go ahead and read this one.  It is not her best, but it still draws you in over time. I can’t wait to sit at book club and talk about the character of Nora- there is a lot to unpack there….

Quote-

“There was a truth observed by all good preachers, leaders, and salesmen: tell a good story, tell it in simple language, tell it often.  That’s  how beliefs and memories were formed.”
